We at OPCOM holds strong to the principle of being responsible
to the people, customers and society from which we operate
from. We believe in making a positive influence in the communities
where we live and work. By doing so, it unites OPCOM both
internally and externally, and thereby strengthens our reputation.
Since listing with the MESDAQ Board in December 2003, OPCOM
has identified a few CSR initiatives for the next few years
with emphasis in the following key areas:
Community/Society Involvement
OPCOM has recently participated in the 50th year Merdeka
parade at Selangor State level.
On Saturday mornings in the months of July and August,
a total of 40 staff donned their sneakers for marching drills
under the tutelage of 3 officers from the Malaysian Armed
Forces. Our contingent, resplendent in their blue batik
and songket, posed a striking sight during the parade on
31 August 2007.
Learning Outreach
OPCOM believes in sharing our know-how and expertise with
young adults embarking on their pursuits of career choices.
What better way to do so than organizing factory visits
and talks for various institutions of higher learning so
as to expose these undergraduates to the in-depth knowledge
and technical competence in the manufacturing industries,
especially in fiber optic cables? Such programs would impart
better understanding of the practical aspects in relation
to the field of study and this would be useful in their
career planning.
On 7 August 2007, OPCOM was host to 37 students from UNITAR
Alor Star. During this visit, the students were given an
informative factory tour by our staff. This visit has given
these students valuable exposure to a working environment
as well as understanding of the manufacturing and production
processes.

Another factory visit was organized and held on 27 March
2008. This time, OPCOM hosted 67 undergrads from Universiti
Teknikal Malaysia Melaka. The visit was very well received
as the students were exposed to the practical aspects of
what they have learnt in class.
Helping The Underprivileged
OPCOM
has the privilege to partner with Persatuan Sindrom Down
Malaysia and its affiliated state-based associations as
part of our Corporate Social Responsibility program for
the year 2007/2008.
On 31 January 2008, our Chairman had presented a series
of grants for the amount of RM50,000 to the President of
Persatuan Sindrom Down Malaysia and the Presidents of Persatuan
Sindrom Down Negeri Perlis, Kedah, Negeri Sembilan, Malacca,
Johor and Trengganu. We sincerely hope that these grants
shall be put to running rehabilitation programmes such as
speech and occupational therapy, making them ready to contribute
positively in the society. We believe that our CSR
program should not only focus on those in urban area, but
must be far reaching even to remote areas of Malaysia. This
is in essence of our “welfare transformation from
charity based to productive welfare” concept.
We thank PSDM for welcoming our support and be given the
chance and opportunity to touch the lives of Down Syndrome
patients by helping to improve their daily well-being, education
and health.
